Editor’s Note: Julian Zelizer, a CNN political analyst, is a professor of history and public affairs at Princeton University. CNN —Democrats are increasingly anxious about their party’s internal divisions over the Israel-Hamas war, which are threatening to hurt their chances in November. The eruption of pro-Palestinian protests on college campuses and the ensuing clashes with police portend bad times ahead. After President Lyndon Johnson announced that he would not run for reelection, the party nominated his vice president, Hubert Humphrey. However, there are many important differences between 2024 and 1968 that could make this current situation significantly less damaging for Biden than some Democrats fear.

The drama was far from over, however, as Chicago, not content with tying things up, went in search of a winner deep into stoppage time. With under a minute to go, it appeared that the home team’s efforts would be in vain as Kellyn Acosta picked up the ball inside his own half. Acosta wheels away celebrating after seeing his long-range strike drop into the back of the net. “For me it was just about getting the ball in the mixed zone basically and create some things,” he explained. The result saw Chicago enter the win column for the first time this season, while Montréal picked up its first defeat of the current campaign.

Walmart announced this week that it is closing four stores in Chicago in a matter of days. Elected officials said that the decision to close the stores "worsens food deserts" in the area. In a rare press release on April 11 announcing store closures, Walmart said bluntly that these stores "have not been profitable since we opened the first one nearly 17 years ago." "Walmart's decision to close four stores in predominantly Black and Brown communities not only worsens food deserts, but will also increase grocery costs for families." Chicago Mayor-elect Brandon Johnson is off to a running start. The hyper-progressive is fulfilling every expectation that he’ll drive even more people and businesses out of the Windy City. Two days after narrowly winning the election, Mr. Johnson thought it a good moment to blame the city’s crime wave on business. “Seventy percent of large corporations in the state of Illinois did not pay a corporate tax,” Mr. Johnson told CBS . “And it’s that kind of restraint on our budget that has caused the type of disinvestment that has led to poverty of course that has led to violence.”
Trump has said he would stay in the race if he is indicted. Trump, meanwhile, is making a forward-looking pitch to voters, NBC News’ Allan Smith and Jonathan Allen report. And the Washington Post reports Friday that prosecutors investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riot have obtained a report commissioned by Trump’s campaign that undercut his falsehoods about the election. "People for the most part have come to terms with interest rates." No return of 2008, or 3% mortgage rate The biggest reason why housing prices aren't plunging like they did after 2008? At current levels, the Housing Affordability Index says the median buyer can afford the median U.S. home — but barely. Having seen 6 percent interest rates when she bought her first place in 2007, she's not daunted by today's rates, she said. "People have wrapped their heads around where interest rates are, and they have adapted," Fisher said.

Is It Too Late to Save Chicago From Progressive Misrule?

The Windy City is in unusually bad shape. Crime is up but the statistics don’t capture Chicagoans’ true concern about the collapse of public order. Taxes are high, pensions are underfunded, businesses are leaving, and unions are gaining unprecedented power in a city they already dominate. One candidate wants a tax on the suburbs; another proposes a “public bank.” But the issue that really matters is crime. Voters want to know: Is anyone here going to save the city from its slow-motion demise?
Salesforce dimmed the brightness of a logo on its new Chicago office building at the request of an alderman. Salesforce is scheduled to move into the 500,000-square-foot office space in Chicago this year. In early January, Salesforce — which is set to move into a nearly 60-story office space in Chicago later this year— crowned its Midwest headquarters with a bright fluorescent logo. According to Block Club Chicago's report, Brendan Reilly, alderman of Chicago's 42nd Ward, asked Salesforce to tone down the brightness. The adjustment took effect on Wednesday, with Salesforce also consenting to turning off the lights at 11pm every night, Reilly's office told Block Club Chicago.
CHICAGO—The first time John Viramontes saw monk parakeets in the wild, they were far from their native home in South America, feeding in a trash-strewn patch of grass beneath an elevated freeway that towers over industrial riverfront and abandoned steel mills on the city’s far south side. The non-native birds have become an unlikely fixture in the urban landscape of the Windy City, where large numbers of the striking green-and-gray parakeets live year-round.
